The veteran on the film that chronicles his high school days five whole years ago Takeaway the league MVP, the five All-Star appearances, the Rookie of the Year award, the high school national championship, the Sports Illustrated cover at 17, and eventually you get to a core. His mom’s in there somewhere, sure—anyone who’d buy her son a $50,000 Hummer for his 18th birthday should be. But most of it’s made up of the small group of friends he grew up with. The guys he played with from middle school through high school back in Akron, Ohio, who dubbed themselves the Fab Five and rarely lost a game together, and who watched—and supported—him as he left them in the realm of mere localphenomery to be a worldwide star. It’s those guys—and the friendship they formed—who are the focus of the new documentary, More Than a Game (out October2). The almost two hours of home movies, gamefootage, and present-day interviews show five boys become friends, a team, and, eventually, men. Which is nowhere near as painfully earnest as it sounds. We talked to him about the film.
W: Did it affect you, having a director at school filming all the time?
LEBRON JAMES: It didn’t bother us at all as players. We just looked at him as part of the team, the guy carryingthe camera. We just lived our lives. He never made us sit down for interviews, noth-inglike that. So itwasn’tabigthing.
W: Have a favorite part?
LJ: When Dru [Joyce] made seven threes in the state championship our freshman year. Just to see what he went through, with all the size, and no one’s giving him a chance, and then he delivered the last game of our freshman year like that. That was unbelievable.
W: Are you all still close?
LJ:Two of them are out here with me right now in L. A., filming a State Farm commercial. And we all live in Ohio in the off-season. Romeo Travis and Dru Joyce are playing professional basketball in Germany. Willie McGee is applying to grad school at the University of Akron, and Sian Cotton is playing football at Walsh College in Canton, Ohio.
W: Do you still refer to yourselves as the Fab Five?
LJ: We refer to each other as friends.
W: Any jealousy issues when the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy guys started using the same name? LJ: No, no, course not, man.
W: So you’re an executive producer on the movie. Plan on doing more producing in the future?
LJ: I don’t know. If a great opportunity opens itself up, I would love to be involved… or star in a movie. I’m a pretty funny guy, and I would love to do a comedy with a bunch of funny guys—movie-star guys, where they could help me through it. W: Has anybody approached you yet?
LJ: We’re just in preliminary talks with everyone. W: What are you up to next? LJ: I’m traveling to Asia and Europe for the movie. W: Do you remember any of the Mandarin you learned for the Olympics?
LJ: Yeah, ni hao. [Hello.] That’s the only one I need.
W:Any favorite cities over there?
LJ:I like Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo—
W: How do they compare to Akron?
LJ: No place is better than Akron.
W: Fair enough.
LJ: No place.

The National Association of Broadcasters recently held its yearly conference in Las Vegas. This year, the wireless industry was in attendance and exhibiting at the show, but the broadcasters seem to have their own ideas about mobile TV.
A few days ago, I wrote about the Harris/LG partnership for MPH, a technology designed to enable regular TV broadcasters to send out mobile TV signals as well as their standard HDTV signals using the same 6 MHz of spectrum. Now, nine of the largest U.S. broadcasters have joined forces to form what is being called the Open Mobile Video Coalition, a “group dedicated to the acceleration of mobile digital broadcast TV.”
This group of nine, including FOX, Sinclair and NBC, claims it represents more than 280 TV stations covering 95 million households in 49 of the top 50 markets. The NAB is an organization to be reckoned with. Not only has the TV industry held on to most of its spectrum, all of the TV stations in the land were given a second channel free of charge (6 MHz of spectrum) so they could develop HDTV while continuing their analog broadcasts. They are supposed to return one of the channels to the FCC at some point (“supposed to” being the operative phrase).
While first responders and commercial networks ended up with some of the 700-MHz TV spectrum, the TV stations enjoy the free use of the spectrum in spite of the fact that recent surveys show that only 20% of U.S. households receive their TV broadcasts over the air. The balance receives them from cable and satellite feeds. The NAB is truly an influential force in Washington.
A look at the nine players shows that only a few of them actually have content beyond local news. The rest own TV stations that rely on content from others, and they make their money on a percentage of the national advertising for the shows and on the local spots they run during syndicated shows. I wonder what the business model will be for these stations that don’t create content.
Seems everyone wants to be in the mobile TV business and I am, frankly, surprised that it took this long for something to start happening within the NAB. It appears as if it too, missed the fact that we are a mobile population more and more.
So, let’s see what we have now: AT&T and Verizon are going to provide a lot of TV channels and content on both their own networks and via Qualcomm’s MediaFLO―content that is optimized for mobile devices and content that is identical, in many cases, to what is already being shown on regular TV. The DVB-H folks are also building out in the United States and, while they have not announced a network operator, I don’t see any slowdown in their efforts. Samsung announced a chip that will fit inside wireless phones and other mobile devices that will provide access, it says, to existing off-the-air HDTV stations. Sprint, with its partner MobiTV, is delivering mobile TV content over its existing network and, according to Intel and Sprint, the WiMAX systems in the process of being built will be able to provide mobile TV to their subscribers both at home and using mobile devices. And, of course, they are also planning to provide the full Internet experience to mobile devices so IPTV should work on these systems as well.
Boy, are we going to have a lot of mobile TV available to us―on every type of device, for any type of purpose. The number of advertisements we will get to watch is going to be enormous as well, since for anyone make money out of all of this, someone will have to pay. But I guess the world has discovered the third screen for real.
What baffles me is that some of the companies that are already working with the wireless networks to provide content are part of this new NAB alliance. I guess they think they can win in all ways—provide content for others and use their own content for their own mobile products. But as I have said before, unless there is a business model for the network operators, I don’t think you are going to see many phones with off-the-air TV capabilities. Of course, this still leaves a lot of other devices, iPods, perhaps, and other yet-to-be-determined devices, and let’s not forget the screens in a lot of vans, SUVs and cars, many of which are equipped with DVD players and screens to keep the kids in the back occupied.

But with more than 230 million wireless devices in use, I would think that the wireless industry might have a leg up when it comes to distribution, but I do not believe that TV designed for broadcast to roof-mounted antennas is going to play well to mobile devices.
The TV broadcast industry is an interesting group with far more clout in congress than it should have. Some of its members are content providers as well as broadcasters, and some are broadcasters only (except perhaps with local news). There used to be three major networks but now there are a lot more, too many to count if you include cable and satellite systems. And how about content that millions of people want and watch each day that you cannot get over the air? CNN is one example, and I know there are hundreds more. Am I going to settle for local TV-only on my mobile device and go back into the olden days of TV, or am I going to insist that I get the same basic capabilities on my mobile phone as I do on my cable or satellite-connected TV at home?
All I can say is here we go again. Let’s see how many pieces of this pie we can slice, and how thin each slice will be.

For decades, fans of melodically over endowed acts like Big Star, Dwight Twilley, and Fountains of Wayne were bewildered by the fail¬ure of post-Beatles power pop to conquer the world. Then, all of a sudden, it did—but it was Disney-generation rockers bringing that sound back, not graying new-wavers. (Don’t believe me? You must’ve missed Meet Miley Cyrus.) Just as improbably, here are rela¬tively grizzled members of Hanson, Cheap Trick, Smashing Pumpkins, and, yes, Fountains of Wayne, ready to capitalize on the tween-pop craze as a super group called Tinted Windows. Tough to tell if their debut will appeal more to Knack nostalgists or kids curious about who that new Jonas Brothers sound alike act is. Tinted Windows singer Taylor Hanson has aged dramatically since you last paid attention 12 years ago—which is to say, he now looks and sounds plausibly post-jailbait— and the kid’s a smooth foil for longer-in-the-tooth Cheap Trick drummer Bun E. Carlos, FoW bassist-singer Adam Schlesinger, and recovering Pumpkins guitarist James Iha. Their Beatle sque quali¬ties extend to the way some of the best cuts are saved for the album’s end stretch, like “Nothing to Me,” a blissfully superficial-sounding plea for emotional honesty. It’s all hook-riddled, fast, and ephemeral, and if you don’t love it, your tie’s too wide.

The sound of your voice could one day help power your cell phone thanks to a breakthrough described in the journal Physical.

The energy in sound waves could help power cell phones “piezoelectric” materials, which produce electricity from vibrations, to the point where even the subtle energy of sound waves can be harnessed.

For over a century, scientists have exploited the unique physics of such materials. They’re used, for example, to power quartz watches and in cigarette lighters. Tahir С agin, a chemical engineering professor at Texas A&M University, and his team doubled the usual power output by making a version just 21 nanometers wide, 5,000 times thinner than a human hair.

A person’s voice can’t provide all the power needed for a typical smartphone, of course. But additional energy could be captured from vibrations caused by walking and other movements.

In dark economic times, when people are losing money, jobs, homes, and other assets, what does it take to cope emotionally? In a word, resilience. The ability to bounce back is crucial in tough times—not just for economies but for human beings. Many psychologists consider it a key component of emotional health. Resilient people, they have observed, are naturally better at containing their anxiety. And that enables them to see in hardship the seeds of opportunity. What would emotional resilience entail in the face of the current crisis? The ability to resist being swept up in the global state of panic and to adapt as creatively as possible to one’s setbacks and losses. As with most personality traits, the roots of resilience usually are developed in childhood, when some combination of temperament, family support, and perhaps plain luck helps an individual prevail over adversity—even something as traumatic as the loss of a parent. Once overcome, such experiences can be carried into adulthood in the form of resilience. Does this mean you have to suffer to develop this quality, or that it’s too late to become resilient during adulthood? Not at all. But just as there is no shortcut to emotional health, you can’t become resilient overnight, or by sheer will, or by reading the latest book on the subject. Instead, resilience is acquired through increasing self-awareness. You must connect with trusted and candid intimates who help you build confidence. You need to repeatedly expose yourself to a range of difficult circumstances and then overcome them. (A few years ago, I pushed one of the CEOs I advise to defy his fears and take risks in the face of losses. The tactic – he wound up developing new products—paid off, both literally and in the form of durable confidence.) In the current meltdown, I see the resilience factor at work in the CEOs I speak with. Some see a dangerous and unpredictable time that they hope to “ride out.” Others consider these events a chance to learn, as they focus on protecting their companies and looking for opportunities. It’s not easy to figure one’s way out of the loss of a job, a home, or the bulk of one’s savings. But resilience can help banish the extreme anxiety that prevents clear thinking, action, and the ability to imagine what’s around the next corner.

There was a time when the fiber glass slide at your neighbor’s pool was a sight to behold. Gleaming white and teeming with slick bodies gliding into the smooth-as-glass water—it was, without a doubt, the envy of every child and an unspoken nod to prosperity.

Pool design has come a long way since those days, growing over the years from standard shapes and colors to leisure on a grand scale. For many, such luxury is a well-earned indulgence from a lifetime of hard work. Others simply view the pool as a continuation of the interior of their homes—an outdoor living space that takes full advantage of the Southern California lifestyle.

Shea Alderete of Alderete Pools shares, “Because of our sunny Southern California weather, people just naturally have come to see their backyards as an extension of their homes—combining the warmth of the interior with the fresh air of the exterior.”

Whatever the reasons for the transformation, there are some new and exciting trends in poolscapes that are making a big splash with modern homeowners who aspire to a backyard that is nothing short of a recreational paradise.

An Idea Takes Shape

When it comes to designing your new poolscape, Brian Cullingworth of Brian Cullingworth Custom Pools and Spas, says it is simply a matter of putting your imagination to work and doing your homework. Talk to other families and find out what worked for them and what did not. Study and follow up on a builder’s references. Cullingworth adds, “Many families are paying close attention to the pools they are enjoying at the resorts where they vacation. They fall in love with a certain feature and then bring the idea to me to replicate in their own backyards. I think of it as a great way of bringing your vacation home with you.”

So, what are some of the most popular of these resort-inspired features? Vanishing edge pools that appear to blend seamlessly into the horizon and bubbling spas tucked away in romantic caves are just the beginning. Cullingworth shares, “Right now, the #1 feature clients are asking for is the swim-up bar. For people who love to entertain, this is a great way to bring your entire party together, whether they are swimming in the pool or opting to sit out and have a drink and conversation. It becomes the hub of all the entertainment.”

Alderete adds another hot trend. “Everyone is asking for fire pots, fire walls, and fire pits—anything that combines fire with water. In the last six months, we have been experimenting with fire around and on water and the results have been spectacular!”

Going With the Flow

So, you know what you want and are ready to dive in. But before you sign on the dotted line, you’ll need to test the waters–literally. It is crucial, shares Culling-worth, that your designer knows how to move water. Poorly engineered filtration systems, heaters and cleaners can be costly to the homeowner and even unhealthy for your family. “Sales agents are very polished and do a great job of selling homeowners on the look of a swimming pool. I would highly recommend that buyers ask lots of questions of their builders about the actual workings of their pool. It’s not the most exciting part of the planning process, but it will save you money, time and energy in the long run.”

Alderete suggests homeowners inquire about state-of-the-art pumps that run at variable speeds for more effective cleaning that are energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. And there is also the saltwater pool option where absolutely no chlorine or toxic chemicals are used. This ensures a safer, gentler water source that is fresh, clean, fully sanitized and easier on your eyes and bathing suits.

Bringing It All Together

It’s easy to think only of a poolscape’s aesthetic appeal. But there are many questions about its purpose and performance that have to be answered in the formative stage of the design process. Where will shade be most needed—in a lounging area or over the bar? Should the spa face the sunset or the city lights below? Where will be the best spot for sunbathing?

Because of this, Cullingworth suggests calling upon the expertise of a qualified builder to help you arrive at a creative vision that functions flawlessly and to your taste. “Whatever your goals are, an experienced designer is going to know how to achieve them,” Brian shares. “Something as simple as the placement of a barbecue island requires careful thought and planning. You’ll want to arrange it so that the chef can still feel part of the party because, often, what’s happening at the grill is the party.”

According to Alderete this attention to detail can even extend to the personal preferences of the homeowner. “We cater our designs precisely for our clients. We will even measure a client’s height to build a custom-crafted stand-up area for him in the spa. This features eight to ten jets that deliver an incredible full-body massage. This is just one example of how we take pride in customizing the backyard to the fullest and making it a truly exclusive place for entertaining.”

Fabulous Finishing Touches

Imagine watching your favorite show on a big screen television as you nestle next to the warmth of a crackling fire. The sun sets to your left, the trees sway in the night and the sky has blanketed you with starlight. Homeowners who are enjoying many lavish pool design elements are finding that the potential for modern outdoor convenience is limitless and ever-growing.

Waterproof plasma TV’s, elaborate sound systems, fireplaces and dramatic lighting options are among the most popular features to be incorporated in the overall plan. Outdoor kitchens—complete with grills, warming ovens, refrigerators and sinks—are fully operational and allow for entertaining that is both efficient and elegant. And all of it can be activated with just the quick click of a button.

“The technological advances in electronics have been amazing,” says Alderete. “It’s actually possible to turn your pool equipment on and off by the touch of your cell phone. In fact, everything we offer in the back yard can be controlled by electronics. With the right price you can have the power at your fingertips. All fire pots, tiki torches, heaters, and outdoors electronics can now be operated by a portable handheld device.”

Final Thoughts

Prepare for the planning and building process to stretch anywhere from two to six months, depending on the size and scale of your project. If possible, look to break ground in the fall. “October or November is probably the most opportune time of the year to get started,” advises Cullingworth. “This way, when the rains come in January, all of the hard work will have been completed. Spring arrives shortly after and is the perfect time for planting and arranging your landscape. Soon, you’ll be enjoying it all in full bloom—the plants, the pool, the parties—just in time for summer.”

Going on vacation should be as comfortable as coming home. But even the best hotels and resorts can carry a sense of impersonality. It is difficult to feel fully exclusive when dozens of strangers share your same space.

More and more luxury travelers are choosing to vacation at home—or rather, in vacation homes: the growing trend in elite accommodations. Quality vacation properties offer the amenities of luxury hotels with a bouquet of bonuses, including increased privacy, exclusivity, and if you’re buying, total personalization. Despite the recent downturn of the U.S. economy, wealthy Americans continue to purchase vacation homes. And according to the Wall Street Journal, global prime real estate continues to rise.

Even if you live in a beautiful place, down time isn’t the same without a change of scenery. Yet different types of vacationers long for different types of landscapes. For some, relaxation isn’t possible without salt-scented air and the resonance of the sea. Others prefer lofty pines and slopes strewn with powder.

Whatever your idea of paradise—the mountains, the ocean or the desert—you’ll find a host of vacation properties and rentals providing the level of luxury to which you’re accustomed.

Mountains

You seek birdsong and green trees, breathable air, expansive vistas over forested valleys.

You yearn for a symphony of seasons: shady trails in the summer and blue-shadowed snowdrifts in the winter. Lakes, rivers, wildlife and wildflowers surround your ideal vacation home. YOUR SANCTUARY: THE MOUNTAINS.

Near: Big Bear

The mountains of Big Bear Lake are an indispensable destination for Southern Californians in search of snow. Just two hours from Los Angeles, Big Bear’s immaculate slopes and evergreen forests evoke more distant winter resorts. Springtime is equally pleasant, heralding activities like lake sports, hiking, fishing and horseback riding through national forests.

VD:

Snow Forest Lodge and Peaceful Cove Estate

In Big Bear’s choicest lakeview and mountain neighborhoods, properties are large and luxurious, while still offering the homey feel of a forest cabin.

Snow Forest Lodge perches above Big Bear Lake, and is massive enough to house up to sixteen—or a family who enjoys extra room. Savor views in every direction from the requisite spa on the lodge’s wrap-around deck. When you’re ready to abscond from the cold, eight televisions, a game room, jetted tubs, a gourmet kitchen and toasty fireplaces guarantee good times inside as well as out.

Peaceful Cove Estate rises above Big Bear Lake like a cathedral, boasting an incredible nine bedrooms and 7200 square feet of living space. Among the estate’s innumerable draws is a gourmet kitchen as well as an outdoor kitchen, a vast great room with a piano and wall-sized fireplace, a comprehensive game room, and a private dock. Decks extend from every bedroom for tranquil lake-gazing, and an indoor spa beckons with utter privacy. This is alpine relaxation at its finest.

If you’re interested in purchasing a Big Bear Lake vacation home, begin your search at.

Far: Europe

Some of the world’s most scenic and celebrated mountain ranges are located in Europe: the Pyrenees between France and Spain, the Tetras of Poland and Slovakia, and of course, the Alps, Europe’s fantasyland for winter sports and joyful yodeling. Vacation homes in the mountains of Europe take countless forms, from a Swiss Chalet near the Matterhorn in Zermatt, to a French Chateau with a view of the Alps, to a Tuscan villa in the foothills of the Apennine Mountains.

VD:

Campitino in Tuscany, Italy

The Society of Leisure Enthusiasts knows how to relax. While the vacation homes it manages crisscross the globe, a good selection are located in the hilly topography of Tuscany, Italy. Home to Florence, one of Italy’s most cosmopolitan cities, Tuscany boasts an enthralling history; cuisine famously flavored with olives and grapes, and of course, striking scenery.

Our favorite Tuscan vacation rental is the Society’s charming Campitino Villa, an island of respite at the very edge of the tiny Pieve a Brancoli feudal village. The 300-year-old, multi-level villa offers plenty of luxury amenities, including a swimming pool, outdoor living spaces, accommodations for up to two families, and an English-speaking local staff.

But the real draw is the verdant Tuscan countryside, which thrives out every window. The villa is cradled by panoramic views, terraced olive groves and fragrant fruit trees. Hike over the hills to the enchanting town of Lucca or picnic on the mountainside beneath the perfect Tuscan sky. Feeling landlocked? The coastal towns of Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio are near enough for a day trip. Or head to Montecarlo and sample some of Tuscany’s best white wines.

You feel unfinished without a soundtrack of crashing waves. You find solace in places where the world meets the water, and feel suffocated too far from the shore. Windows facing the sea and balconies over the sand complete your ideal vacation home. YOUR SANCTUARY: THE OCEAN.

Near: San Diego

While San Diego’s inland attractions are unbounded, nothing beats waking up and stepping onto the sand—even if you live in San Diego year-round. Rent a beach house for a week, a month. Or even better, buy a seaside home of your own. That way, you can avoid the crowds and visit anytime—including mid-fall, San Diego’s secret second summer.

IT:

Ocean Pacific Companies in Mission Beach

Along San Diego’s metro coasts, Ocean Pacific Companies has carved out a well-deserved reputation for the architecturally significant designs of its homes. After buying up vintage lots, OPC transforms them into oceanic art pieces: evocative of the shoreline’s curves, yet with a sleek, modern flair.

While OPC has constructed upmarket custom homes in La Jolla, it focuses primarily on Mission Beach: the narrow San Diego peninsula OPC considers the last great underdeveloped beach in Southern California. Flanked by Mission Bay and the Pacific Ocean, Mission Beach is the epitome of a vivacious beach city. Most OPC homes and upmarket condo complexes lie along Mission Beach’s Ocean Front Walk, with patios spilling out onto the sand.

To maximize indoor comforts, OPC homes include luxury embellishments like top-shelf appliances, transparent staircases, and sculptural molding. But OPC knows you’re there for the outdoors: expansive windows and retractable ceilings embrace the scenery in every direction.

Far: Central America and the Caribbean

The region between North and South America is a dreamscape for any ocean-lover. With two expansive coastlines and countless islands of every size, the vacation options in Latin America and the Caribbean are endless. Book a maritime mansion on the coast of Anguilla Rent a villa at Belize’s exclusive Cayo Espanto, a private four-acre island resort. Or purchase a gated sanctuary in the Mayan Riviera. No matter where your itinerary takes you, the waistline of the Americas is a winning destination.

IT:

Piedras y Olas in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

If you’re looking to purchase a piece of one of Central America’s most up-and-coming beaches, consider Nicaragua’s stunning coastal community of San Juan del Sur. Often extolled as the new Costa Rica, San Juan del Sur is still laudably lacking the overflow of tourists swarming destinations to the south.

San Juan del Sur’s most lavish and happily-located development is Piedras y Olas. The residential resort’s sugar-white homes and villas scale the verdant hillside, overlooking San Juan’s impossibly picturesque bay. On-site attractions include six swimming pools, an art gallery, a spa, an exercise center, and three gourmet restaurants.

Every customized home is entirely furnished down to that last crucial corkscrew, so you can sip red wine on your ocean-facing verandah the moment you arrive. Between vacations, Piedras y Olas takes care of everything from marketing to maintenance. And Piedras y Olas is a conscientious investment in more ways than one: the resort is dedicated to admirable crusades such as wildlife rehabilitation, local education programs, and the usage of sustainable building materials.

IT:

Villa Les Amis du Vent in St. Barthelemy

Because of the melange of European influence in the Caribbean region, island-hopping is like trekking the continent—just with better beaches.

Though St. Barthelemy is now part of the French West Indies, it was once a Swedish colony. The fusion lends to its culture and architecture; both upscale, lively, and always lovely.

In a word, St. Bart’s Villa Les Amis du Vent is dazzling. The Mediterranean style villa perches on five and a half acres at the tip of Marigot Bay in Mont Jean, greeting prismatic views of the bay and the Caribbean beyond.

Enter through the villa’s double staircase and be prepared to gasp. White, bright and antique decor enliven the expansive interior, which includes three bedrooms encircling a formal garden, six and a half bathrooms, gourmet kitchen, air-conditioned TV room, exercise room, office, and indoor and outdoor showers. The large heated pool seems to sweep into the Caribbean below, coaxing repose.

If you want to sample the sea for yourself, follow one of the wildflower-lined private trails leading to the shore.

Desert

You crave open spaces, endless skies, wind-sculpted caverns, sagebrush, and sand dunes. You revere the muted beauty of pastel colors— until sunset, that is, when the desert sky comes alive. Sunny afternoons and sugar-dusted nights lie just outside your ideal vacation home. YOUR SANCTUARY: THE DESERT.

Near: the Coachella Valley

Cradled by the San Jacinto, Santa Rosa and Little San Bernardino Mountains, the Coachella Valley is California’s most-visited desert. Besides the legendary recreational oasis of Palm Springs, Coachella is home to ritzy Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage and La Quinta. Desert-dwellers enjoy a wealth of pastimes, from golf to horseback riding to nightlife and gourmet dining in downtown Palm Springs. But some of the best moments of any Coachella retreat lie in its details: the wind stirring the date palms, the haunting cry of a coyote, a walk out under the stars.

Griffin Ranch in La Quinta

Credited by the Robb Report as the United States’ leading golf destination, La Quinta, southeast of Palm Desert, is one of the Coachella Valley’s most exceptional oases. With a growth rate of almost 110 percent every ten years, La Quinta is one of the fastest growing California cities— almost guaranteeing sizeable returns on real estate investments.

La Quinta’s brand new Griffin Ranch, a 242-acre master-planned development, channels the tranquility of the surrounding desert in a luxurious setting. Griffin Ranch includes four residential communities carved from the late Merv Griffin’s personal estate, each with a distinctive international flair paired with the ranch’s overarching equestrian theme.

Homes offer amenities from walk-in wine rooms to detached casitas. Or buyers can opt for one of the limited edition one-acre home sites, blank canvases for creating customized mansions. Collective amenities include a 24,000 square-foot clubhouse, dining facilities, and a state-of-the-art Saddle Club with boarding facilities for eighty horses.

Far: Morocco

The world’s liveliest desert might just be Morocco, as little as thirty-five minutes from Spain across the Gibraltar Strait, which connects the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. Because of its location, Morocco is an amalgamation of European, African and Middle Eastern cultures, and its remarkably diversified cuisine and architecture reflect this medley of influence. Morocco’s cities like Casablanca, Tangier and Marrakech are bustling hubs of color, while its scenery is captivating. And because of Morocco’s royal history, vacation homes can be downright palatial.

Manzah al Jamil in Marrakech

Like its entire nation, Marrakech in Central Morocco is a blend of contradictions: ancient and modern, hectic and peaceful. Even its arid landscape seems paradoxical, with the snow-capped Atlas Mountains in the background.

Manzah al Jamil is a contemporary luxury villa in one of Marrakech’s most exclusive districts. The grounds belie the desert beyond, featuring lakes, fountains, reflecting pools, and a heated swimming pool, as well as courtyards, orchards and manicured gardens. Inside, the villa’s arches, tapestries and polished stone floors are markedly Moroccan, while modern amenities such as plasma screens channel Western comforts. Every corner of Manzah al Jamilis is extravagant, from its vaulted gallery to its stylish summerhouse overlooking the pool.

Manzah al Jamil sleeps ten, enough room for two families to vacation together. The property is entirely self-contained, ideal for enjoying the serenity of the African desert. Or venture fifteen minutes into the city and visit Djemaa el-Fna square: one of the most animated squares in Africa, packed with performers, vendors, food stalls and musicians.
