The veteran on the film that chronicles his high school days five whole years ago Takeaway the league MVP, the five All-Star appearances, the Rookie of the Year award, the high school national championship, the Sports Illustrated cover at 17, and eventually you get to a core. His mom’s in there somewhere, sure—anyone who’d buy her son a $50,000 Hummer for his 18th birthday should be. But most of it’s made up of the small group of friends he grew up with. The guys he played with from middle school through high school back in Akron, Ohio, who dubbed themselves the Fab Five and rarely lost a game together, and who watched—and supported—him as he left them in the realm of mere localphenomery to be a worldwide star. 2The National Association of Broadcasters recently held its yearly conference in Las Vegas. This year, the wireless industry was in attendance and exhibiting at the show, but the broadcasters seem to have their own ideas about mobile TV.
A few days ago, I wrote about the Harris/LG partnership for MPH, a technology designed to enable regular TV broadcasters to send out mobile TV signals as well as their standard HDTV signals using the same 6 MHz of spectrum. Now, nine of the largest U.S. broadcasters have joined forces to form what is being called the Open Mobile Video Coalition, a “group dedicated to the acceleration of mobile digital broadcast TV.” (more…)

100For decades, fans of melodically over endowed acts like Big Star, Dwight Twilley, and Fountains of Wayne were bewildered by the fail¬ure of post-Beatles power pop to conquer the world. Then, all of a sudden, it did—but it was Disney-generation rockers bringing that sound back, not graying new-wavers. (Don’t believe me? You must’ve missed Meet Miley Cyrus.) Just as improbably, here are rela¬tively grizzled members of Hanson, Cheap Trick, Smashing Pumpkins, and, yes, Fountains of Wayne, ready to capitalize on the tween-pop craze as a super group called Tinted Windows. 29 In dark economic times, when people are losing money, jobs, homes, and other assets, what does it take to cope emotionally? In a word, resilience. The ability to bounce back is crucial in tough times—not just for economies but for human beings. Many psychologists consider it a key component of emotional health. Resilient people, they have observed, are naturally better at containing their anxiety. And that enables them to see in hardship the seeds of opportunity. What would emotional resilience entail in the face of the current crisis? (more…)

Diving Into Pool Design

20There was a time when the fiber glass slide at your neighbor’s pool was a sight to behold. Gleaming white and teeming with slick bodies gliding into the smooth-as-glass water—it was, without a doubt, the envy of every child and an unspoken nod to prosperity.

Pool design has come a long way since those days, growing over the years from standard shapes and colors to leisure on a grand scale. For many, such luxury is a well-earned indulgence from a lifetime of hard work. Others simply view the pool as a continuation of the interior of their homes—an outdoor living space that takes full advantage of the Southern California lifestyle. (more…)

Extraordinary Vacation Homes

8Going on vacation should be as comfortable as coming home.  But even the best hotels and resorts can carry a sense of impersonality. It is difficult to feel fully exclusive when dozens of strangers share your same space.

More and more luxury travelers are choosing to vacation at home—or rather, in vacation homes: the growing trend in elite accommodations. Quality vacation properties offer the amenities of luxury hotels with a bouquet of bonuses, including increased privacy, exclusivity, and if you’re buying, total personalization. Despite the recent downturn of the U.S. economy, wealthy Americans continue to purchase vacation homes. And according to the Wall Street Journal, global prime real estate continues to rise. Oceans

1You feel unfinished without a soundtrack of crashing waves. You find solace in places where the world meets the water, and feel suffocated too far from the shore. Windows facing the sea and balconies over the sand complete your ideal vacation home. YOUR SANCTUARY: THE OCEAN.

Near: San Diego

While San Diego’s inland attractions are unbounded, nothing beats waking up and stepping onto the sand—even if you live in San Diego year-round. Rent a beach house for a week, a month. Or even better, buy a seaside home of your own. That way, you can avoid the crowds and visit anytime—including mid-fall, San Diego’s secret second summer. (more…)
